Steps to Avoid Identity Theft

Summit State Bank is committed to helping you protect your personal information from theft. If you receive an email that appears to be from Summit State Bank and it asks you to enter your account number or other personal information into the email, or asks you to click on a link to a non-secure webpage, the email was not sent by Summit State Bank.  Although the email or website appears to be from us, it is designed with the intent to trick you into providing private information about yourself and your accounts.

Summit State Bank will never:

  • Send email asking you to verify or update your personal information using email or entering information directly into a web site.
  • Send email threatening to close your account if you do not take immediate action by providing personal information.
  • Send email that contains your user ID, password, account numbers or tax ID information.

The number of victims that fall prey to “phishing” is rising, so here are several additional ways you can shield yourself and others. Phishing is the act of sending an email to a user falsely claiming to be an established legitimate enterprise in an attempt to scam the user into surrendering private information that will be used for identity theft.

  • Visit the Federal Trade Commission identity theft web site to learn more about protecting yourself.
  • Never give personal information over the phone, even when the caller says they represent a trusted party – your bank, doctor, financial advisor, real estate related company or other business. Verify the caller before providing any information.
  • Do not provide personal information online for other members of your family or friends.
  • Never give another person’s personal information over the phone, even if the caller states they have the permission of the third party.
  • Do not include personal information in emails to us or other parties, unless you send it using secure email. If you wish to send us personal information via email, use our Secure Mail Center.
  • Do not send personal information using a fax unless you are certain the fax number provided is the correct destination and the information will be protected once it arrives at the destination.
  • Report lost or stolen checks immediately. We will block payment on the checks that you report lost or stolen.
  • Report lost or stolen credit cards immediately. Keep a list of account numbers and customer service telephone numbers available.
  • Shred financial documents, including monthly statements and the print-outs you may make of your online banking activities.
  • Periodically check the major credit reporting companies to verify the information is correct and to identify any suspicious activity.
