Meet our Board of Directors

At Summit State Bank, we choose our board members carefully and seek individuals who bring integrity, honesty, financial responsibility, engagement, business acumen and who are active in our community. Given the dynamics of community banking, continuing education, participation with industry trade groups and regulatory seminars are an integral part of ensuring a competent and knowledgeable board. We believe that the make-up and diversity of experience, education, views and opinions is a powerful component of what makes a community bank effective and successful.

Allan J. Hemphill

Allan J. Hemphill

President, Hemphill and Associates

Allan Hemphill has served as the Chairman of the Board since 1999.  He is also the President of Hemphill & Associates, a winery consulting and management company.  In addition, he is a realtor with North County Properties where he assists in vineyard and winery acquisitions and sales.  Mr. Hemphill draws on his experience as a wine industry veteran having served as assistant champagne maker and Vice President of Operations at Korbel Champagne Cellars, a world-renowned champagne company.  In 1977, he became the President of Chateau St. Jean Winery in Sonoma Valley until it was purchased in 1986. 

In addition to his professional activities, he serves on the Board of Directors for the North Coast Railroad Authority and the Redwood Empire Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

 

Jim E. Brush

President & Chief Executive Officer, Summit State Bank

Jim Brush was named President and CEO of Summit State Bank in April 2016. He has served on the Bank's Board of Directors since 2009 and, most recently, was the Chair of the Bank’s Loan Committee. Prior to joining Summit, he had a CPA tax practice in Healdsburg for many years. Mr. Brush graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Golden Gate University.

He is actively involved in the Healdsburg community and currently serves as the President of the Healdsburg Museum & Historical Society. He's also a member of the Sonoma County Assessors Appeals Board, Treasurer for the Healdsburg Greyhound Booster Club and on the board of MyHBGTV.

Jeffery B. Allen

President, Allen Land Design

Jeff Allen is the President of Allen Land Design, which designs and installs award winning gardens that are ecologically sound and beneficial to the environment.  Mr. Allen’s entrepreneurial spirit has been instrumental in the development of Muchas Grasses, a company established in the 1980’s and evolved into the largest resource of decorative grasses in the state of California. In the late 90's he founded Olivet Groves Organic, which supplies buyers of olive trees and olive oil throughout California.  In 2004, Jeff cofounded American Biodiesel/Community Fuels, a pioneering Biodiesel company.

He was appointed to the Bank's Board in 2013, bringing with him his knowledge of the community and ecologically sound landscape architecture industry. He has served as both vice president and president on the Sonoma County Laguna Foundation.

Josh C. Cox, Jr

Banking Consultant, Josh Cox & Associates

Josh Cox, Jr. is the principal and owner of Josh Cox & Associates, a consulting firm focused on bank management and profitability enhancement.  Since the early 70’s, he has served as the Chief Executive Officer and Director of numerous financial institutions.  Mr. Cox served as Senior Vice President of Summit State Bank from April 2006 to May 2007 and was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2011. 

Mr. Cox has spent a large portion of his career assisting troubled companies with asset, profitability or overall management challenges. He currently serves on the Bank's Executive and Loan Committees and is Chairman of the Information Technology Committee.

Bridget M. Doherty

Co-Owner and President, Encore Events Rentals

Bridget Doherty is the Co-Owner and President of Encore Events Rentals and Cal-West Rentals, both family owned businesses that she runs with her brother, Tyler Doherty. Bridget graduated from the University of Southern California in 2000 and took over the management of the family’s rental business shortly thereafter. Through her leadership, the single rental location in Petaluma has grown into two separate rental companies with locations throughout Sonoma County, specializing in event and heavy equipment rentals.

Ms. Doherty is very active in the Petaluma community and recently received the Next Gen Benedetti Leadership Award. She is active in her local and national rental associations, as well as event associations.  Bridget was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2016.

Todd R. Fry

Chief Accounting Officer, Installed Building Products, Inc.

Todd Fry is the Chief Accounting Officer of Installed Building Products, Inc., a building products supplier and installer company. Before that, he was the Chief Financial Officer of Champion Industries, Inc., a commercial printing, office supply and retail office furniture company.

Mr. Fry was appointed to the Bank's Board of Directors in 2000 for his extensive knowledge of finance and accounting. He is also the director of the State of West Virginia’s venture capital fund since 2010.

Ronald Metcalfe is a Certified Public Accountant and Partner in Call & Metcalfe, Certified Public Accountants, P.C. The practice is in Novato and has been in existence since 1995.

Mr. Metcalfe was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2000 and brings with him extensive knowledge of accounting and the local business community. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Bank’s Audit Committee.

Richard E. Pope

Richard E. Pope

Environmental and Engineering Consultant, Codding Investments, Inc.

Richard Pope is an Environmental Engineering Consultant for Codding Investments, Inc. He is also the Development Director for the design, entitlement and implementation of Sonoma Mountain Village SOMO in Rohnert Park, which is the first certified deeply sustainable mixed use community in North America. This community was endorsed as a One Planet Community, one of only five in the world. Sonoma Mountain Village is a $2 billion deeply sustainable project and part of One Planet Living and One Planet Communities, which are an initiative of London-based Bioregional and World Wildlife Foundation.

Mr. Pope is also the co-founder of BrightHaven, a nonprofit Animal Sanctuary, which was awarded the Jefferson Award for Public Service in 2013. He was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2013.

Nicholas J. Rado

President, Rado Consulting Services

Nick Rado is the President of Rado Consulting Services. This business concentrates on accounting, job costing and Workers’ Compensation insurance for general engineering construction businesses. He's been the Vice President and CFO of North Bay Construction since 1991 and has an engineering background and extensive financial operations experience. He was a board member of the Engineering Contractors Association for 18 years, being honored as the Contractor of the Year in 1991 and 1996.

Mr. Rado contributes extensively to the Petaluma community, including service on the Board of the Petaluma Boys & Girls Club. He was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2009.

Marshall T. Reynolds

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Champion Industries, Inc.

Marshall T. Reynolds is the President & General Manager at The Harrah & Reynolds Corporation. He serves as the Chairman of numerous organizations, including First Guaranty Bancshares, Inc., Energy Services of America Corp., First Guaranty Bank, Premier Financial Bancorp, Inc., Pullman Plaza Hotel, River City Associates, Inc., McCorkle Machine & Engineering Co. and Radisson Hotel.

Mr. Reynolds is also the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Champion Industries, Inc. and serves on the Board of Citizens Deposit Bank and Trust. He was appointed to Summit State Bank’s Board of Directors in 1998.

John. W. Wright

John. W. Wright

Business Consultant

John Wright is a Business Consultant, but was previously the Managing Director at Baxter Fentriss & Company, an investment banking company focused on the financial institution industry.

Mr. Wright serves on the Boards of Virginia Capital Partners, a private equity fund, and Vesta Property Services, a property management company for condominium and homeowner associations. He was appointed to the Board of Directors in 2014, bringing with him extensive knowledge of the financial industry and capital markets.
